Museum Honoring Maurice Sendak a Possibility in Ridgefield

The author of the popular children's book 'Where the Wild Things Are' spent the last four decades of his life in Ridgefield.

Ridgefield is pursuing a museum honoring Maurice Sendak, the author of “Where the Wild Things Are”.

Sendak, who died in 2012 spent the last four decades of his life in Ridgefield.

According to News Times, the town is looking at a vacant modernist building that is in walking distance from the village center. The glass building designed by architect Philip Johnson served as corporate offices for an oil exploration company that left in 2006.

On Tuesday, voters in Ridgefield approved the sale of 10 acres of the former Schlumberger Property, which would return $4.3 million to the town.

First Selectman Rudy Marconi said the sale could help the museum proposal, the News Times reports. Local arts figures recently received endorsement from the town and from Sendak’s foundation to explore the proposal.
