Ridgefield Boys Soccer Advances in Class LL Tournament

Joey DeVivo scored in overtime to give the Tigers a 1-0 victory at Newtown.

Joey DeVivo scored with two minutes left in the first overtime Monday, lifting the Ridgefield boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Newtown in a CIAC Class LL first-round contest.

The mild upset over the No. 15 Nighthawks sends the 18th-seeded Tigers into a second-round matchup against either No. 2 Naugatuck or No. 31 East Hartford.

Ridgefield (10-6-1) avenged a 3-0 loss to Newtown in the first round of last season's Class LL tournament when the Tigers were the higher seed.

DeVivo scored the goal on an assist from Andrew Carlson, and Tigers goaltender Matt Knizeski finished up with 14 saves for the shutout.

Ridgefield won't play again until Thursday, as the Naugatuck-East Hartford clash was postponed until Tuesday.

The Tigers will play at Naugatuck unless the Greyhounds, who enter the tournament with a 13-0-3 record, are upset. In that case, Ridgefield would host East Hartford.
