Ridgefield to Celebrate Flag Day

Members of the American Legion and the Marine Corps will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of WWI in a special ceremony.

RIDGEFIELD, CT -- Members of the American Legion and the Marine Corps detachment will be celebrating Flag Day this year in a special ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

The program will feature a colorful look at the Battle of Belleau Wood, one of the most important battles ever fought by the U.S. Marine Corps. In addition to short speeches and patriotic music, the Marine Corps will demonstrate the proper and legal means of retiring worn, faded and unserviceable flags. The program features an actual flag retirement ceremony.

"Flag Day is a day when we all gather to bring attention to the red, white and blue that unites all Americans," said George Besse, commander of American Legion Post 78.

The ceremony will be held in the Gazebo at Ballard Park.
