Ridgefield Dam a "High Hazard," Remedies Investigated
Final draft of the plan is due autumn of 2019.

RIDGEFIELD, CT — Engineers and other representatives from state and federal agencies met with the public on April 19 to lay out options for fixing or removing the Great Swamp Dam. The structure impounds a tributary of the Norwalk River near Route 35.
The dam has been re-classified as a "high hazard," indicating that its failure would result in a "probable" loss of life. Engineers' options include removing the dam, making structural changes or taking other measures to floodproof the area. The final plan will be devised by USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Services, who were commissioned by dam owners NY State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Officials expect to have the final draft of their plan by autumn of 2019.
