Ridgefield PD K-9 Zeus to be Honored with Final Ride

Zeus will be put down on April 15. Come say goodbye to Zeus during his final ride that begins at Ridgefield Police Headquarters at 4:45 p.m.

Editor’s Note: We originally ran this story on April 9 but ICYMI a longtime member of the police department K9 Zeus will be given his final ride. 

The Ridgefield Police Department is saying goodbye to a valued member of its team.

Zeus, an 11-year-old German Shepherd will be euthanized on April 15 as a result of his severe degenerative hip disorder. Zeus retired from the force on May 20, 2014 due to this disorder and his health has seriously declined since then.

The police department announced Zeus’ departure on their Facebook page.

Zeus joined the department in 2006 and was partnered with Officer Shawn Murray who he continued to reside with after his retirement.

During Zeus’s career he was responsible for over 250 narcotics arrests, performed hundreds of demonstrations for the public and conducted over 50 tracks for missing or wanted individuals. During these tracks he located 6 individuals that were in life-threatening situations and located 6 suspects that had fled the scenes of crimes.

The largest amount of narcotics Zeus was responsible for seizing was 10 pounds of marijuana in 2006.

Retired Police K-9 Zeus will be honored on April 15 with his final ride. The ride will begin at Police Headquarters at 4:45 p.m. and take the following route: West on Governor Street, North on Rt. 35/Main Street, North on Rt. 7, ending at Ridgefield Veterinary Hospital.

Ridgefield officers will be joined by local law enforcement agencies to pay tribute to Zeus during this final ride.

Members of the community are asked to gather on the sidewalks of Main Street along the route if they wish to pay tribute. Zeus was a valued member of our team as well as our community and will be greatly missed.
