Ridgefield Teen Receives Highest Honor at Model UN

At a recent Model United Nations (MUN), St. Luke’s junior and Ridgefield resident Ruth Mercedes was named Best Delegate—the highest honor possible. Ruth was one of nine members of St. Luke’s MUN team who attended this event hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Students participated on a wide range of committees, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC), and the Disarmament and International Security Commission (DISEC). It was Ruth’s stellar diplomatic skills representing Germany on the IMF that distinguished her and earned her the top honor at this event.

This conference was the first and last for some of the St. Luke’s team members. Ninth graders Will Winalski, Jack Reed, and Matthew Sherter did a great job participating in their first Model UN. Co-President Mary Grace Thomas ‘19 ended her high school years on the team on a high note with a strong showing at her final MUN conference. Four years ago, Mary Grace and classmate Carolina Warneryd ‘19 revived St. Luke’s Model UN and helped turn it into the thriving club it is today.
Next up for the team is the biggest tournament of the year, at Cornell University in April.
