RIDGEFIELD, CT --- A public hearing centered around a proposed fracking ban has been scheduled for May 9. The ordinance was proposed by the Ridgefield Action Committee for the Environment.
Connecticut has a state-wide ban on fracking that is scheduled to lapse on July 1. The Ridgefield proposal would not only ban the unlikely occurrence of fracking in town, but also the use of products that contain material from oil and gas fracking.
Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is a means of natural gas and oil extraction in which fluids are injected into underground rock formations at high pressure. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, he U.S. contained approximately 300,000 hydraulically fractured wells, which accounted for 67 percent of U.S. natural gas production and 51 percent of U.S. crude oil production in 2015.
