VISIONS - Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra in Concert October 3rd!
Featuring violinist Jeremías Sergiani-Velázquez with the orchestra.
The Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra (RSO) begins its 62nd orchestra season on Saturday, October 3rd at 7:30 PM at the Ridgefield Playhouse with a concert titled VISIONS.The concert features the outstanding professional musicians of the RSO, under the leadership of Music Director Eric Mahl and joined in concert by acclaimed violinist Jeremías Sergiani-Velázquez. The concert program includes music from three different centuries and features an iconic classical work by Beethoven, a romantic era piece by Fanny Mendelssohn, and a late 20th century composition by Astor Piazzolla comprised of four tangos.
The concert opens with Fanny Mendelssohn’s Overture in C Major, written in 1832 and her only surviving orchestral work.The piece combines a beautiful, slow introduction with a lively, cheerful and energetic faster tempo throughout the rest of the work.The overture will be followed by the Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, a collection of tangos, by Astor Piazzolla, completed in 1970 by a composer rooted in the world of the tango.Like the dance itself, Piazzolla was born in Buenos Aires, moving to NYC when he was four, but returning to Argentina in his teens to study with eminent Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera.
Highly acclaimed violinist Jeremías Sergiani-Velázquez joins the orchestra as soloist for the performance of the Piazzolla.Born in Argentina, Jeremías has performed classical, contemporary, and tango music around the world. As a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer, he has been heard in 16 countries across four continents. Jeremías also holds the position of principal second violin for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
The second half of the evening’s concert features Ludwig van Beethoven’s marvelous programmatic work (music that explicitly tells a story and evokes scenes from nature) Symphony No. 6 in F Major. Written in 1808 and also known as the Pastoral Symphony, the symphony captures the emotional experience of nature in an unusual five movements, to which Beethoven gave descriptive titles: Awakening of cheerful feelings upon arriving in the country; Scene by the brook; Merry gathering of country folk; Thunder and Storm; and Shepherd's song and happy and thankful feelings after the storm.
The concert will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at 7:30 PM at the Ridgefield Playhouse (80 East Ridge Road, Ridgefield, CT). Doors open at 6:00 PM, with a pre-concert talk in the auditorium at 6:30 PM with Music Director Eric Mahl and soloist Jeremías Sergiani-Velázquez, open to all ticket holders.
