Why Our Purpose Matters So Much at Wooster School

Hear what our new families have to say! After the first few weeks of school, we checked in with our new families on how the start to the year was going for their children. This is what they are telling us and we wanted to share with the greater community as well:
“She is doing great...she has met many new friends, really likes her teachers and loves the food. She auditioned for the fall production and was cast in multiple roles...she is very excited for that.”

One parent took the time to send a note to our Head of School, Matt Byrnes after the first two days of school. Here is an excerpt from that letter:
“Before the craziness of the holiday weekend and school year consumes me, I wanted to send a quick email complimenting not only the amazing upper school students, but the teachers and the progressive vision of Wooster. This is our 4th year at Wooster and the first year I have two kids in the lower school!!! As I gave tours and answered questions to new parents this week, I fought back tears trying to explain the essence of what makes Wooster so special. As a recovering public school teacher myself, I now, more than ever, appreciate the opportunities a private school education brings. Especially one from Wooster. Some parents don’t always understand the difference is not just the academics but the culture of the school. I explained to these new families, that it’s about; receiving a picture of your children hiking in the beautiful woods on that rare March day because “who doesn’t want to be outside on that warm day, after being locked inside all winter?” Or when you open up Facebook on your lunch hour and your son and his classmates are running around the playground with huge smiles on their faces because a friends goat just had babies and she wanted to share in the excitement of it with her Wooster family. Or when you are out to dinner at a local restaurant and two teenagers from the Upper School come over to your table to talk to your 8 year old and it makes his whole day. Or it’s watching your son struggle with homework one night and he says, “it’s not that I can’t do this, I can’t do this YET, I just have to change my mindset.” Or it’s the fact that everyone that works with your child KNOWS your child inside and out and they truly want them to be the best version of themselves...
As I continued to explain to the parents, sometimes when you take away all the boundaries that are set up in public schools, you are left with kids that become teenagers, that become adults, that love learning, respect others opinions and in general, become better human-beings that realize that they are part of a greater cause that is bigger than themselves.
But what made me really feel compelled to write you, is when I picked up my kids from school Friday afternoon and they both said, “Mom thank you for sending us to Wooster, this is the best school ever!!” I couldn’t get a word in between the two of them, going on and on about their day and how “cool” and “nice” the kids in the upper school are and how they “LOVE” their teachers!
Mr. Byrnes my heart is filled with gratitude. Not only to you for having a vision that is more than academics but to your teachers and faculty that understand it as well.
I leave you with a picture a teacher texted me of my son because she loved it as much as I do.”
