Wooster School Fourth Grade Celebrates Ancient Greece

Wooster School fourth grade students recently completed their study of Ancient Greece. Throughout the fall months, the students learned about the history and contributions of Ancient Greece. They created a large map, read history books and websites, studied myths, and wrote across the curriculum to enhance their understanding. In the fall they visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art to examine Greek pottery, statues, and other artifacts. In art class, the students learned to work with clay; they made their own Greek pots and painted them with traditional earth tones. The students also wrote information essays on a topic they were interested in as it pertained to Ancient Greece. They made and decorated their own plaster mask to depict an Olympian. They also learned about greek music in music class and in PE class they competed in their own Olympics, which culminated in an abbreviated marathon.

As a celebration of their hard work and accomplishments, the students gathered with their families for a Greek festival. All gathered in the Honor Room to tour the 'Greek Museum,' displaying all of their work and to feast on some authentic Greek food. The students dressed in Greek chitons and performed three plays based on the myths of Persephone, Arachne, and Echo and Narcissus. It was a great evening, bringing together our fourth graders and their families and putting an exclamation point on all of the hard work and learning that took place these past months.
