The Independence Day Association of Greenwich will kick off the nation's semiquincentennial celebration with its annual Fourth of July flag-raising ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 4, behind Greenwich Town Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
The ceremony will feature live music by the Sound Beach Community Band, the Assembly trumpet call, ceremonial rifle fire by the Greenwich Police Department Honor Guard, and remarks from First Selectman Fred Camillo. Boy and Girl Scouts will present the 13 Colonial flags, Boys & Girls Club teens will recite Ragged Old Flag, and veterans from American Legion Post 29 will raise the American flag.
Good Citizenship Awards will be presented to Joell Molina of Greenwich High School, Mia Secko-Thompson of Greenwich Country Day, Meghan McMahon of Sacred Heart, Finn Sargent of Brunswick School, and Mia Jones of Greenwich Academy. The ceremony will also recognize descendants of Greenwich's early settlers, Revolutionary War patriots and fallen patriots. The names of Greenwich residents who died during the Revolutionary War will be read, followed by a moment of silence, a 21-gun salute and Echo Taps.
Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to the Town Hall gazebo for refreshments and America's birthday cake.
