6th Annual Iwo Jima Survivors Victory Ride
70th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, 1945-2015
Sunday, May 17, 2015
The 6th Annual Iwo Jima Survivors Victory Ride will be held May 17, 2015, Rain or Shine. The ride is organized by the Iwo Jima Memorial Historical Foundation and Support Our Survivors of Iwo Jima. All proceeds from the ride go to the Maintenance Fund for the National Iwo Jima Memorial located on the New Britain – Newington Town line in Connecticut.
The iconic image of the flag raising was captured by photographer, Joe Rosenthal, and became the symbol of hope during World War II. Of the six men who raised the second flag on Mt. Suribachi, only three lived to leave the island while the remaining three were killed before the battle was over. This year marks the 70th year since the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 and the end of World War II. Come celebrate with us and honor the men who sacrificed their lives and who fought for our Freedom.
The Iwo Jima Memorial is the only flag raising monument in the nation which was built by survivors of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima Survivors built the memorial in memory of their 6,821 comrades who perished during that bloody 36-day battle of World War II. The mission of the non-profit Foundation is to maintain the monument, perpetuate the memory of those who fought and died on Iwo Jima and to educate others about WWII and the importance of the battle. The monument is maintained entirely by volunteers and through donations.
This ride will also pay tribute to all World War II Veterans, our “Greatest Generation”, through OPERATION THANK YOU. All WWII veterans are invited to attend FREE as Guests of Honor for the day and will receive special VIP treatment. Call for reservations.
The Victory Ride format will be a Poker Run and will begin at the VFW on Veterans Drive in New Britain, CT. The ride will include a ceremony at the Iwo Jima Memorial. The winning poker hand will receive $100. A cookout will follow the ride and include raffle prizes, 50/50 raffle, DJ entertainment and trophies to motorcycles and WWII Vets.
We are requesting your participation and sponsorship in order to make this possible for our “Greatest Generation”. Sponsors are needed so please contact us if you would like to help with donations.
