Belden Library To Host Black History Beyond The Amistad With The Connecticut Historical Society

The virtual session will be held Thursday.

Thursday, Aug. 13, 7:00PM - 8:00PM

Get a special Behind-the-Scenes tour with Connecticut Historical Society! While all of us probably learned about the Amistad during our school years, there is much more to Black History in Connecticut! CHS will highlight items that tell the story of black residents, both ordinary and extraordinary, from the 1600s to today. Come learn about Ann Petry, who carefully preserved artifacts chronicling the black community of Saybrook. Examine daguerreotype photos by Augustus Washington, who abandoned a successful Hartford photography business to build a new nation in Africa. And get to know James Pennington, a hero of the anti-slavery movement whose words later became an inspiration for Martin Luther King, Jr. Registration is required to receive the Zoom ID and password. Registration will close 15 minutes before the start of the event. You will receive a confirmation email, followed by a second email with the Zoom ID.
