In fashioning the American Republic, the Founders arranged a system of Checks and Balances; among which was a criteria of voting that was to act as a check on the masses, since the Founders did not trust the Common Man. The particular check in question is known as the Electors. In Article II, Section 1, paragraphs 2 and 3, the Electors are described. The numbers of Electors from each state has to equal the amount of its Representatives in the House and the number of its Senators. How the the Electors are chosen, was to be left up to the States. Such was considered an aspect of States Rights. But today, voters do no choose the Electors, Democrats and Republicans do, a development giving them an advantage over other parties. This talk will describe the Electors; how the system was supposed to be implemented and historical examples referencing different elections in American History. Presented by Mark Albertson, historical research editor at Army Aviation magazine and historian for the Army Aviation Association of America. Mark has authored several books, published articles in a variety of newspapers and magazines and teaches history as an adjunct at Norwalk Community College.
