Exclusive Club Holds Meeting in Rocky Hill

Superman's girlfriend could be a member. Could you?

On October 30, 2012, an exclusive women’s club is scheduled to hold its 12th annual meeting in Rocky Hill. There’s only one requirement for membership: You have to have the name Lois.

The Lois Club has chapters in 30 states and Canada. Most members are in their 70s or older. Very few younger women share the name, which once ranked as high as 21 on the list of most popular girls’ names in the 1930s.

The Connecticut chapter formed in 2000 after founder Lois Morton of Rocky Hill met two other women who shared her name at an event at Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang in Ashford. One of the other Loises told Morton about a Lois Convention she had attended in California. Soon, the Connecticut Lois Club was born. Because it got its start at the Hole in the Wall Gang, the group continues to volunteer at the camp for children with cancer and other blood-related diseases one week a year, according to their website.

From the initial meeting with 11 Loises, the Connecticut Lois Club’s ranks have swelled to as many as 100 members in recent years. Members get together for fun and friendship, meeting for lunch five times a year at restaurants around the state. Morton and other members of the Connecticut chapter also take part in national Lois Club conventions and cruises.
