Mason Jar String Art Online With Zoom

The third weekly Make It Mondays Zoom class hosted by the Cora J. Belden Library is set for tonight.

Monday, Jul. 27, 6:00 pm

I’ll be honest, I couldn’t wait to try my hand out on this craft. And let me tell you, it’s as easy as it is beautiful! The hardest part was deciding what to do with the wood. The third week's craft, the Mason Jar String Art is so very customizable, no two need ever look alike! We’ll supply the wood (which is poplar). The wood is raw, but sanded…shoutout to my amazing husband for sanding all those down! We also supply the mason jar template, the nails, the string and your starter flower set. I say starter flower set because since this craft does not rely on glue to keep the flowers in the string jar, you can change these flowers out as often as you wish or mix and match! BEFORE THE PROGRAM you will be making a big decision. How will I treat my wood? There are many choices, so I’ll only list a few possibilities: you can leave the wood as is, or apply a clear matte varnish, or a light stain, a dark stain, or a tintable color stain. You could use something that will show the grain of the wood or choose to use acrylic paint such as the FolkArt from a craft store which would hide the grain. I’ve added links to some choices. Based on just the two links I’ve supplied you’ll have nearly 300 choices! If you do decide on a treatment be sure to apply several thin coats rather than one thick, and to allow for proper drying time in between coats. Don’t forget to paint both sides and all four edges! Please be sure that the last coat has dried at least 24hrs before the class, we don’t want your template sticking to the wood and removing your hard work!In order to complete this craft, you will need to purchase or have on hand: ruler, tape (nothing too sticky), scissors (you don’t want to use the good ones you use for fabric or paper on this, get a spare pair from the Dollar Tree, you’ll be using them to cut the flowers to individual stems from the bunch and those are plastic coated wire), wood stain/paint etc., (which ever you decided on), a hammer or something to tap the nails into the wood, a paint brush or cheesecloth to apply the wood treatment (I used cheesecloth).
