Rocky Hill Man Charged With Burning Toddler

ROCKY HILL, CT — A Rocky Hill man has been charged with burning a toddler, police said.

On Saturday, the Rocky Hill Fire Marshal’s Office received a report that a 2-year-old Rocky Hill resident had been brought to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and there were burns on the child's body, police said.

The initial report had indicated that the burns were the result of an electrical fire at 200 Cold Springs Road, part of the Century Hills Apartment complex. The child’s condition is said to be serious, police said.

The incident had not been previously reported to Rocky Hill Police or fire officials and police said it had taken place sometime in the early morning hours.

The child was brought to the hospital by a family member, police said.

Rocky Hill Police and Fire personnel responded to a local apartment, and Rocky Hill police detectives responded to the hospital, according to a report.

Police said they were getting "inconsistent" information through questioning, and the focus of the investigation turned to the last adult to have contact with the child — an acquaintance of the child’s mother. Rocky Hill police then arrested Michael Shamel Davis, 27, of Rocky Hill, according to a report.

Davis is charged with risk of injury to a minor, third-degree arson, second-degree reckless endangerment, interfering with police, tampering with evidence, and issuing a false Statement (second degree). Davis is being held on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Monday, police said.

The incident is under investigation by the Rocky Hill Police Department's Criminal Investigations Unit and the Rocky Hill Fire Marshal’s Office. The police department is also investigating the incident with the state Department of Children and Familiues, according to a report.

Davis is a resident of 200 Cold Springs Road and that the incident was confined to the home. A risk was never posed to the public, police said.
