
Jean A. (Wasilewski) Backiel, 83, of Rocky Hill, died peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, in the comfort of her home. She was the beloved wife of the late Wenceslaus J. "Vinny" Backiel.
A lifelong Rocky Hill resident, Mrs. Backiel was a member of St. James Church. She spent her entire life on the family farm and also enjoyed spending time in her garden, baking for her family, and making sure no one left hungry after helping at the farm.
A loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she leaves her son Edward Backiel and his wife Karen of Rocky Hill; and two daughters Marian Duksa of Copake, NY, and Joan Bryck and her husband David of Rocky Hill; seven grandchildren, Kristina and Edward Backiel of Rocky Hill, Brenda and Russell Sorrells of Fort Mill, SC, Susan and David Kiernan of Copake, NY, Robert and Olivia Duksa of Colchester, Kevin and Elizabeth Bryck, and Matthew and Elizabeth Bryck, all of Norwalk; and ten great grandchildren. She also leaves several nephews, including her devoted nephew Stanley Backiel of New Britain. She was pre-deceased by her son-in-law Robert Duksa.

Her family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers, Halina, Ganek and Wanda, for their kindness and compassion.
Her funeral service will begin on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Church, Rocky Hill. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Britain. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Newington Memorial.
