2 Men Accused Of Setting Fire To Playground In Ansonia, Police Say

The men were charged with reckless burning after a playscape was destroyed in a fire over the weekend.

ANSONIA, CT — Two men have been arrested in connection with an arson that destroyed a playground in Ansonia, according to police.

Police and firefighters were dispatched at 3:29 a.m. Saturday to Gatison Park at the area of Third and Fourth streets on a report of a fire.

The playground and rubber safety matting beneath it were "completely engulfed in flames," according to police. Firefighters extinguished the blaze.

A fire marshal's investigation found that the fire was set intentionally.

Following a police investigation, two suspects were identified and later arrested.

Jayvon Johnson, 19, and Jose Bordoy, 19, both of Ansonia, were charged with first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree conspiracy to commit criminal mischief reckless burning, conspiracy to commit reckless burning, second-degree reckless endangerment and conspiracy to commit second-degree reckless endangerment.

Both were issued $25,000 bond. Johnson posted bond and is scheduled to appear in Derby Superior Court on Oct. 21.

Bordoy was held and scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

The investigation remains ongoing.
