Derby Police Issue E-Bike Safety Reminders

DERBY, CT — As the weather warms up throughout Connecticut, police have provided a list of e-bike safety reminders for Derby residents.

In a Facebook post Tuesday, police said they are seeing a significant increase in the use of electric bicycles throughout the city as the weather improves.

"While e-bikes can be a convenient and enjoyable, they also present unique safety risks," police wrote on Facebook.

According to police, e-bikes are capable of traveling at higher speeds than bicycles, often exceeding 20 mph.

"This increased speed reduces reaction time, increases stopping distance and can lead to more serious injuries in the event of a crash," police wrote. "Many operators, especially juveniles, may not fully appreciate how quickly dangerous situations can develop in traffic."

The department also provided the following safety reminders for riders and parents:

• Know the law. E-bikes must follow the same traffic laws as motor vehicles, including stopping at stop signs and traffic signals.
• Wear a helmet. Protective gear significantly reduces the risk of head injury.
• Be visible. Use lights and reflective clothing, especially at dusk or night.
• Ride responsibly. Sidewalk riding at high speeds, carrying passengers, and distracted riding increase the risk of crashes.
• Parents: Understand the capabilities of the e-bike you are purchasing. Some models closely resemble motorcycles and can travel at unsafe speeds for young riders.

"Our goal is prevention through education," police wrote. "We encourage all riders to make safe choices and all motorists to remain alert for e-bikes sharing the roadway. Let's work together to keep everyone safe."
