Football Player Assaulted After Fight Breaks Out During Game In Derby: Police

DERBY, CT — A football player was assaulted after a fight broke out during a game Saturday night in Derby, according to the Derby Police Department.

In an email Tuesday, Chief of Police Brian Grogan said officers were called to the Leo Ryan Sportsplex on Chatfield Street around 9 p.m. after receiving reports of a large fight following an adult men's tackle football league game.

Grogan said police received information that a fight erupted between players, prompting coaches to end the game early.

According to Grogan, the disturbance continued after the game ended, and one player was reportedly struck in the head with a football helmet by a member of the opposing team during the incident.

The player was semi-conscious following the assault, Grogan said.

Emergency medical crews were called to the area and the player was taken to Griffin Hospital for treatment of a head injury, according to Grogan.

Grogan said the department is actively investigating the incident, "including the events leading up to the altercation and the actions of those involved."
