Derby Police Announce New School Resource Officer

DERBY, CT — Officer Stephanie Kowalec has joined the Derby school system as the district's newest school resource officer, the Derby Police Department announced Saturday.

In a Facebook post, police said Kowalec has been with the department for 18 years and "brings dedication and a strong commitment to serving our community" to her new role.

According to police, her experience and passion for community engagement will make her a tremendous addition to Derby's schools.

"As an SRO," the department's post reads, "Officer Kowalec will play an important role in building positive relationships with students, staff and families while helping strengthen the partnership between the Derby Police Department and the Derby school system."

Police also thanked Mayor Joseph DiMartino, Superintendent Matthew Conway Jr., the Derby Board of Education and police commissioners for their support and commitment to making the city's schools and community stronger.

"This appointment is another important step in our continued commitment to community policing, building trust and creating positive connections with the people we serve," the post reads.
