DERBY, CT — The 2023 municipal election is heating up in Derby and there are plenty of local races with candidates eager to serve in elected office.

What is your occupation?

3 years as a Spanish Teacher

Do you have a family? If so, please tell us about them.

I come from a family of 6. My parents Luis and Dora Barrios along with my three younger siblings Lester Barrios who's 22, Sindy and Gabriella Barrios who are twins and are 16 years of age.

Does anyone in your family work in politics or government?

No

Have you ever held a public office, whether appointive or elective?

No

Now we'd like to ask a few questions about your reasons for running and your general views on politics and government. First, why are you seeking this office?

I aim to make a difference being the first hispanic in my family creating a place that is safe, filled with life opportunities for everyone in our Derby community and bring inspiration to our youth demonstrating that we also have a voice.

Please complete this statement: The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ___, and this is what I intend to do about it.

Severe financial crisis, lack of communication and management. I plan to support and restore our town, supporting the needs of our citizens.

What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

I have the advantage of being new to politics, bringing new perspectives and ideas to create a better Derby for tomorrow, showing the world that we may be small, but our town is strong.

What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?

Trust and reputation, The city needs people who care and can give trust in the responsibilities and actions that need to be taken to rebuild the city of Derby for a better future for the community.

What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?

My parents always tell me, "Don't let people look down on you just because your different, use your uniqueness as your strength to succeed".

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?

I am a good listener and trustworthy. I am kind and I always put others first because I care. I'm a hard worker and I don't let any obstacles affect me. I am supportive in the needs of others.
