Gov. Malloy Announces Thanksgiving Update on State Road Projects

Gov. Dannel Malloy is temporarily suspending all construction and paving activities on state roads and highways over the coming Thanksgiving weekend to prioritize the convenience of motorists and help ease congestion, he announced Wednesday.

“The Thanksgiving holiday is traditionally one of the busiest travel periods of the year, and we want to ensure that Connecticut residents and visitors do not have to worry about additional delays throughout the weekend that could cause an inconvenience because of roadwork,” said Gov. Malloy in a statement. “All non-emergency, construction activities on state roads and highways are being suspended beginning at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, November 23, through 8 p.m. on Monday, November 28. Only work of an emergency nature will be performed during that period. There are hundreds of great places to visit in Connecticut, and we encourage everyone to plan ahead and drive safely.”

Those traveling in Connecticut can visit the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s travel information map and check the traffic camera feeds before heading out on the roads.

AAA is projecting that 48.7 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home between Wednesday and Sunday, an increase of one million travelers compared with last year and the most Thanksgiving travelers since 2007.

The organization reports that this year’s increase in travel is spurred by improvements in the economy during the second half of the year, including rising wages, increased consumer spending and overall strength in consumer confidence, as well as gas prices that are the second-cheapest during this holiday since 2008.
