Medication Take Back Event To Take Place In Derby

Naugatuck Valley Health District, Derby police and Derby Youth Services Bureau will host a medication take back event later this month.

DERBY, CT — Naugatuck Valley Health District will once again partner with the Derby Police Department and Derby Youth Services Bureau to host a medication take back event Oct. 28.

According to a news release provided by NVHD, the drive-up event will take place outside Bradley School, located at 155 David Humphrey Road in Derby, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Aligned with the Drug Enforcement Agency's (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and the Naugatuck Valley Community Health Improvement Plan initiative focused on substance use and drug overdose prevention, this event is being held in reflection of our joint commitment to safety and health by encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes, according to NVHD.

Any person can come and safely dispose of unused or unwanted medications during the event with no questions asked, according to NVHD. Attendees can drive up and place their car in park, drop off accepted medications and drive away.

This event is open to the public, regardless of their town of residence.

The following items will be accepted, according to NVHD:

  • Over-the-counter medications.
  • Prescription medications.
  • Medication samples.
  • Medications for household pets.
  • Medicated lotions or ointments.
  • Vape devices (battery must be removed).

The following items will not be accepted, according to NVHD:

  • Needles or other "sharps."
  • Hazardous waste.
  • Thermometers.
  • Personal care products (shampoo, etc.).

Anyone who cannot make it to the event can drop off accepted items in a medication drop box, no questions asked, located in the lobbies of the Ansonia, Naugatuck or Shelton police departments.
