Natural Gas Explosion In Seymour Injures 3: Report

The explosion occurred Tuesday afternoon near Maple and Pearl streets.

SEYMOUR, CT — Three people were injured Tuesday afternoon in a natural gas explosion at an apartment building in Seymour near Maple and Pearl streets, wrote NBC Connecticut.

Two of the people reportedly suffered serious burns and are being treated at Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit, while the third person suffered minor burns and declined treatment.

WTNH-TV reported that one of the victims, a woman in her 50s, suffered burns over 80 percent of her body, while a second victim, a man in his 70s, suffered burns over 15 percent of his body.

The explosion occurred at about 2 p.m. in the building's basement, and the resulting damage to the structure has temporarily displaced five people, who are being helped by the American Red Cross.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion, which temporarily closed Maple Street while firefighters shut off the gas leak and extinguished the fire caused by the explosion. The road has since been reopened.
