Obituary: Robert R. Newell, 81, Of Shelton

SHELTON, CT — (From Adzima Funeral Home): Robert R. Newell, 81, of Shelton, beloved husband of Theresa (Hmurcik) Newell, passed away on February 8, 2024. Bob was born in Bridgeport on May 2, 1942, to the late Carleton B. Newell Sr. and Elizabeth (Nicolaisen) Newell and had been a lifelong area resident.

He was a U. S. Army veteran. Bob was a retired meat cutter for A&P and Stop and Shop. He will be remembered for his appreciation of vibrant family discussions about the world, the wonders of nature and the positive calming influence of meditation. He was proud of both his Mayflower Descendant and Tribal heritage.

Survivors in addition to his beloved wife of 46 years, include his devoted daughters, Kelly Smerglinolo of Naugatuck, and Stephanie Newell of Shelton, cherished grandchildren, Gianna Smerglinolo and Gavin Newell, sisters, Karen Pavlinski of Texas and Eva Newell of Beacon Falls, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bob was pre-deceased by his brother, Carleton Newell Jr. and sisters, Doris Tkacs and Beverly Newell.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 16 at 10:30 a.m. meeting directly at St. Lawrence Church 505 Shelton Avenue Huntington. (Masks are recommended.) Entombment with full military honors will follow in Mt. St. Peter’s Cemetery, Derby.
