Obituary: William R. Smith III

Beloved Father, Grandfather and Friend

William R. Smith III, age 86, of Shelton entered into rest on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at Bridgeport Hospital with his loving family by his side. He was born in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana on June 27, 1935, son of the late William R. Smith, Jr. and Marelle (Young) Smith. He was a resident of Huntington, CT for 49 years.

William was an avid reader and would enjoy doing a daily crossword puzzle or two, always done in pen. He was a runner for his entire life, proud of his recent daily running streak which he maintained for exactly 16 years. He ran the Boston Marathon 16 years in a row and in his later years enjoyed participating in many local 5k races. He was also a co-founder of The Hartford Track Club.

William was a loyal friend, maintaining relationships across the decades. He and his local buddies would meet for weekly breakfasts. His meals were always covered with salt, and he would never say no to a slice of apple pie.

William earned two master’s degrees and a PhD while attending Trinity College, University of Connecticut, and George Washington University. Over the course of his lifetime, he worked as an electrical engineer, university professor, mathematician, computer programmer and computer circuit board designer. He was most proud to see the growth and achievements of his three children and six grandchildren.

He was the beloved father of William R. Smith IV and his wife TammyAnn, Paula M. Mohamed and her husband Mohamed, and Geoffrey M. Smith and his wife Elizabeth while also being the loving grandfather of Heather, Rami, Molly, William V, Inga and Ethan. He survived both of his ex-wives Jeannette C. Smith, mother of his three children and Jacquelyn Cody, mother of his three step-children James F. Cody, Michael J. Cody and Cynthia L. Webb.

Friends may call on Monday from 5 to 7 PM at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Rd., Shelton. On Tuesday, his funeral service will be at 10:00 AM at the funeral home. His burial will follow at Lawn Cemetery East, on Lane Street in Shelton.
