Report Lists Top Reasons Why Shelton Police Officers Pull Over Your Vehicle

Shelton has the lowest number of traffic stops among all municipal departments in the state.

A recent report by the Connecticut Racial Profiling Prohibition Project found that the Shelton Police Department conducted 618 traffic stops from Oct. 1, 2013 through Sept. 30, 2014., the lowest among all municipal department.

The reasons a Shelton police officer is likely to pull you over include: 15.4 percent; speeding infractions; 1.5 percent; cell phone offenses, 9.5 percent; defective lights, 8.7 percent; display of plates, 13.1 percent; moving violation, 3.6 percent; registration offense, 0.8 percent; seatbelts, 5.2 percent; stop signs, 0.8 percent; suspended license, 11 percent; failure to obey traffic control signals, 0.2 percent; window tint and 30.3 percent; other.

There is a good chance you will be given a verbal warning rather than a ticket in Shelton.

According to the report, among the 618 stops, officers gave a ticket 19.09 percent of the time, a written warning 9.39 percent of the time and a verbal warning 58.25 percent of the time.

Of Shelton’s total traffic stops 6.47 percent are for Black drivers and 77.5 percent of those stops involve non-residents, according to the report. Hispanics account for 7.12 percent of Shelton’s traffic stops and 61.36 percent of those involve non-residents, the report states.

Overall, 342 resident stops were made in Shelton with 8.48 percent of these stops accounting for minority residents. Shelton’s minority population comprises 10.83 percent of its total population that is of legal driving age.
