Shelton Frontman Of Popular Cover Band Shares Update On Cancer Diagnosis

The Shelton resident and longtime musician recently shared on social media his "fight has unfortunately taken a new shape."

SHELTON, CT — Darik Pearson, a Shelton native and frontman of the popular Connecticut cover band Darik and the Funbags, shared an update on his cancer diagnosis this week on social media.

Pearson, who was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in 2020, said in an Instagram post Tuesday his "fight has unfortunately taken a new shape."

"Last Tuesday I was admitted into Yale [New Haven] Hospital due to cancer progression into my cranium which posed life threatening complications," Pearson wrote on Instagram. "Consequently, this has brought all treatment options to an end and set me on the road to hospice care."

Pearson said the strength and resilience of his family has helped him to cope with this next chapter, "whether that means preparing for a beautiful death or continuing to defy the odds."

He also thanked Yale's doctors and nurses for all their help and noted the amount of love he has received, especially from his innermost circle of friends, "is unparalleled to anything I've ever experienced in my life."

Pearson shared details of his health journey earlier this year through a GoFundMe page, which has raised just over $61,000 toward a current $70,000 fundraising goal as of Wednesday evening.

The page has received over 700 donations thus far.

"It's hard to say exactly what I'm feeling right now other than pure gratitude," Pearson's Instagram post reads. "I am so grateful for the life I built, the extraordinary people in it and the little piece of the world I'll leave behind. Although I'm not ready to get off the wheel just yet, I have zero regrets, I respect and love who I am and will eventually leave this earth knowing I left it better than I found it. I have found peace. God bless my ability to evolve, adapt and change when I most needed to. There is nothing more powerful in life."

Darik and the Funbags is a cover band known for its high-energy live performances and wide-ranging repertoire spanning rock, pop, rap, and country music.

Formed in the late 1990s by Pearson and former frontman Chris Michols, the band has built a reputation over more than a decade for its dynamic stage presence, crowd engagement, and unique takes on popular songs.

The group has performed at local venues, music festivals, college campuses, NFL pregame events, and corporate functions and has shared stages with nationally known artists, according to the band's bio.

In addition to live performances, the band has released several live albums featuring cover songs and original music. The group bills itself as one of New England’s top party bands.
