Shelton High Repairs Underway After Mold Tests

State officials tested the school for the presence of mold and made remediation suggestions to school officials.

SHELTON, CT — Connecticut OSHA has released a report about mold in some Shelton High School classrooms. A consultant walked through areas in September after being contacted by school facilities officials about potential mold growth issues and a report was issued in late October.

“The school has had a history of roof water leaks within multiple fourth floor classrooms and condensation leaks from the chilled water lines within the suspended ceilings along the House 2 Hallway,” said Brian Testut, occupational hygienist in his report. “Visibly stained and suspected growth was present on several ceiling tiles in the House 2 hallway and within multiple classrooms on the fourth floor.”

Conn-OSHA performed a number of tests including airborne and swabs for fungal growth. Some samples turned up elevated levels, The report noted that fungal air sampling itself can’t be used to predict bad health consequences, but it’s generally easier to remediate than to prove fungi in a building are causing health disorders.

Superintendent Christopher Clouet said on the school system’s website that efforts are underway to comply with recommendations in the report.

Some fungal species including Stachybotrys chartarum, Penicillium and Acremonium species that are typically associated with wet building materials were found in several samples. Swab samples for fungi were collected and four samples turned up with elevated fungi levels from wet or water stained ceiling tiles.
