Shelton Police Officer Dies After Cancer Fight

Officer Richard VanTine was a husband and father of two.

SHELTON, CT — Veteran Shelton Police Officer Richard VanTine passed away this week after a battle with cancer, the department announced.

"It is with deep regret and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Officer Richard VanTine after a valiant battle with cancer," officials wrote.

VanTine was a 24-year resident of Shelton, and he leaves behind a wife, Elizabeth, and two sons, Ben and Alex.

A GoFundMe campaign was launched before VanTine's passing to aid his family, and as of Friday, it had generated more than $13,000 toward a goal of $25,000.

"He has served his city with pride and true care and concern for the residents of Shelton," wrote John McMahon, who organized the GoFundMe page. "It is imperative for a person of Rich’s caliber to receive recognition not only for his career, but for the outstanding person he is. Fundraising efforts have been made by the Shelton Police Department to show their support of their brother. However, it is asked that any persons who have read this bio to please make a contribution to the Van Tine family to show them your unwavering support."

Before joining the Shelton department in 2020, VanTine retired as a Connecticut State Trooper, a position he held for more than 20 years.

He was also a Marine Corps veteran who served in the Gulf War.
