Shelton Students To Get Free Lunch, Breakfast Through November
District officials said students will continue to receive free school meals through November using further extended SMART funds.
SHELTON, CT — Superintendent Ken Saranich announced this week Shelton students will continue to receive free school breakfast and lunches through November through the district's School Meals Assistance Revenue for Transition funds.
In a message sent to parents this week, Saranich said the district has opted into the SMART funds, which provide breakfast and lunch at no cost for all students. These funds cover the cost of one breakfast and lunch per student per day.
"We are happy to share that the funds have now been extended further to cover breakfast and lunch costs through the month of November," Saranich said.

The SMART funds will not cover a second lunch nor "a-la-carte extras," Saranich said.
He also noted the program will expire at some point and urged families to submit a free-and-reduced-priced-meal application as soon as possible to determine a student's eligibility for this school year and avoid unpaid meal charges.

"Completing and submitting an application will also help your child's school raise additional funds to help us make meals available to all students at no cost for as long as possible," Saranich said.
Families who do not submit a free-and-reduced-price-meal application, or whose child is not directly certified, will automatically default to full pay when the SMART funds end, Saranich said.
