The suspect is accused of stealing a check from a Westport victim, and changing the payee.

WESTPORT, CT — A 24-year-old Shelton woman was arrested on a warrant this week on charges of identity theft, larceny and related violations after Westport police said she stole a check and deposited it into her own bank account.
Michelle Colon surrendered to Westport police on Monday, and was charged with the following:
- Second-degree forgery
- Second-degree larceny
- Second-degree identity theft
- Criminal impersonation
Westport police were notified of the larceny on in May, when a local complainant said he had mailed a check from a mailbox inside Griffin Hospital in Derby.

"He was later notified that the intended recipient never received the payment and discovered that the check must have been stolen at some point as the name of the payee had been changed to Michelle Colon," Westport police said. "The complainant was not familiar with that person and confirmed that he never wrote out a check to her."
A Westport police detective determined that the altered check had been deposited into a Chase
Bank account, which belonged to Colon.

"Additional evidence tying Ms. Colon to this crime was obtained," police said. "A warrant for her arrest was completed and signed by a Superior Court judge."
Westport police did not disclose the amount of the check, but a charge of second-degree larceny would indicate that it was in excess of $5,000.
Colon was released after posting bond on bail of $50,000, and she is scheduled to be arraigned in Stamford Superior Court on Aug. 11.
