Timothy J. Walsh III, Former Chairman of the Shelton Board of Education

The following obituary is from the Riverview Funeral Home:

Timothy J. Walsh III, age 77, a lifelong resident of Shelton, entered into his eternal rest on Friday June 17, 2016 with Gail Phipps Walsh, his loving wife of 42 years by his side.

Tim was born in Bridgeport on June 12, 1939, son of the late Timothy Walsh Jr. and Adeline Walsh.

He began his career as a teacher at the former Fowler School teaching science, then became the head teacher at the one time Fowler School Portables. In 1974 Tim was appointed Headmaster at the newly developed Shelton Intermediate School where, with his devoted assistant Bill Banfe, he developed the famous “cluster system” which is still in use today. Under his tenure, Tim was awarded a national blue ribbon by Pres. George W. Bush on the lawn of the White House for excellence in education. This is the only time a Shelton School has been recognized with this honor. After many successful and gratifying years at SIS Tim was appointed Headmaster at Shelton High School. Within two years he knew every student by name, as he had at SIS. Tim’s famous TJWIII license plate was often seen in the parking lot on Sundays during his 35 years as a Shelton Educator. After Tim’s retirement in Shelton he developed a middle school program for the Town of Watertown. Tim missed working with Shelton students and he ran for the Board of Education. He continued on the Shelton BOE for 13 years, serving as Chairman for two terms. He and his father had the distinct honor of both serving as chairman of the Board of Education in Shelton.

Timothy was an active communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Shelton, was a member of the Shelton JC’s, The Youth Service Bureau, and a former member of the Oxford Board of Finance. Tim was named the man of the week by the Shelton Herald, the 2014 Democrat of the Year, and was recognized by many state and national dignitaries.

Tim was predeceased by his loving son William, inventor and CEO of the now nationally used Greenbox, an eco-friendly pizza box. He is survived by his son Timothy Walsh and wife Kathleen and daughter Regina Maloney and husband William. He is the brother of Thomas Walsh and Susan Walsh. Tim is the loving grandfather of Alexandra Fanning, William Maloney, Timothy Parker Maloney, and Anna Walsh. He is the uncle of Marissa Walsh (John), Katherine Maffucci (Brian), Lisa Birden (Jim), Keith Walsh (Angela), and Steven Pedbereznek (Karen). Tim leaves several great nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held for Walsh at Shelton's St. Joseph Church on June 21.
