The Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St., Derby, will explore the joys and heartache of being a caregiver for a loved one with Dementia with a free event featuring a reading Connecticut author John Scully, of West Hartford, on Tues., May 20 at 5:30 p.m.

This supportive and encouraging event features an exploration of the emotional strain, the hopeful possibilities and the importance of connection when caring for a person diagnosed with these confusing and frustrating diseases. Scully will read a selection from his novel, Visited Mom Today: Conversations through the Lens of Alzheimer's and Dementia, which recounts his visits to his mother at a nursing home memory care program and his humorous, somber and overall inspiring conversations with other residents at the nursing home. It is through these conversations that Scully discovered that the secret to connecting to loved ones with Dementia lies in stepping into their world, instead of reminding them what is no longer possible in this one.

The reading will be followed by a panel discussion with members of Griffin Health Community Outreach about the importance of support for caregivers and a community expert on resources for individuals diagnosed with dementia and their caregivers.
