SHELTON-DERBY, CT — A major winter storm is barreling toward Connecticut Sunday into Monday, with the possibility of a foot or more of snow amid nasty, biting cold, according to the latest weather forecasts.


Local Weather

Southern Connecticut is expected to get between eight and 14 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Sleet may mix in with the snow in southern areas of the state, reducing the total accumulation, the National Weather Service said. Coastal Connecticut is expected to get the lower end of the range.

A winter storm watch is in effect for early Sunday through Monday afternoon.

Travel is expected to be difficult, with hazardous road conditions and reduced visibility, and the National Weather Service advises delaying any travel if possible.

While Saturday is currently expected to be mostly sunny and cold, the latest forecast as of Friday morning calls for snow on Sunday starting around 1 a.m.

The snow could be heavy at times. High near 25. Northeast wind 5 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible, according to the forecast.

Snow Emergency Declared For Derby

In a news release Friday afternoon, Mayor Joseph DiMartino announced he has declared a snow emergency for Derby beginning Sunday, Jan. 25, at midnight.

During the snow emergency, parking will be restricted to the even numbered side of all city streets until 36 hours after the storm ends.

The Derby Municipal Parking Garage, located at 2 Thompson Place, will be open for residents of the downtown area to park their cars during the storm at no charge until 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, according to the release.

The city asks that all non-emergency vehicles stay off the roads during the storm for their safety.


Trash, Recycling Pickup In Derby

DiMartino also announced Friday there will be no trash or recycling pickup on Monday, Jan. 26, due to the coming snowstorm.

As a result, all trash and recycling will be delayed one day all week.


What Shelton Police Are Saying

In a Facebook post Friday, police said snow is expected Sunday, Jan. 25, with accumulation ranging from 8–12 inches.

"The heaviest snowfall is expected from mid to late afternoon, which may lead to hazardous travel conditions," police wrote on Facebook. "Please plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and drive safely. Continue to monitor official forecasts for updates!"


Garbage, Recycling Impacts In Shelton

According to a PSA from the Shelton Department of Public Works shared by police Friday morning, there will be no garbage or recycling collection Monday due to the impending storm.

All collections will be delayed by one day for the week, with Friday's pickup occurring Saturday.

The Shelton Transfer Station will also be closed Monday.

"We ask residents to please stay off the roads if possible and park vehicles in driveways to allow plow trucks to operate safely," the post reads. "If travel is necessary, please use caution and be mindful of plow operations."

School Cancelations

As of Friday morning, neither Shelton or Derby public schools has announced any school closures for Monday, Jan. 26. If a cancelation or delay is announced, it should be posted to the district's website here (Shelton Public Schools) and here (Derby Public Schools), and/or social media.


Derby Issues Winter Storm Parking Regulations

With more snow in the forecast, the city reminds residents of Derby's winter storm parking regulations.

According to a news release provided by the city Thursday, Derby has revised its winter parking ordinance to improve snow removal operations and public safety during winter weather events.
