The Simsbury boys basketball team's first game "went about as well as a first game can go," according to head coach Greg Stillman. The Trojans (1-0) jumped out to a 13-2 first quarter lead and never looked back on their way to a 62-23 win over Platt. Jake Downing poured in 9 of his team's 19 points in the opening frame. Simsbury then built a 35-11 halftime margin. Jeff Smith led all scorers with 15 points and also added 4 assists and 6 rebounds. The Trojans played stifling defense and shared the scoring duties with 9 different players registering points. Next up for Simsbury is Conard at home on Monday at 7 p.m.
Things did not go quite as well for the boys hockey team in their opener on Wednesday. It started out well as the Trojans (0-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd period on a goal from Jordan Radin. But South Windsor answered with 4 goals of their own in the 3rd period on their way to a 4-1 win. John Ryan had 21 saves for Simsbury in the losing effort.
The Simsbury wrestlers found a similar fate in their opener at Bristol Central Wednesday, falling 40-18. Edward Novak and Brad Helmkamp pinned their opponents in the losing cause for the Trojans. Winning by decision were John DePasquale and Ben Durst.
