SIMSBURY, CT — The Simsbury Police Department is warning residents about the return of “Water Wars,” an annual game played by Simsbury High School seniors that began Monday, April 20, and is expected to last about two weeks.
Police emphasized Simsbury Public Schools do not endorse the activity and said the department does not support or condone it.
In the game, students are assigned targets and attempt to “eliminate” them using water guns outside of school hours.
Police said participants may approach targets at homes, in vehicles, or at social events.
While the game typically involves brightly colored toy water guns, officers noted past incidents in which participants used water guns resembling real firearms, raising safety concerns.
“This poses significant challenges and concerns for law enforcement and may lead community members to believe criminal activity is taking place,” the department said in a statement.
Police urged parents to discuss safety expectations with students who may be participating.
The department outlined several guidelines, including avoiding speeding or vehicle chases, not obstructing traffic, and steering clear of disruptive behavior in public or at businesses.
Participants are also advised not to wear dark or camouflage clothing and to use only water guns that clearly appear to be toys.
The department said its priority is “ensuring the health and safety of all students” during the event.
Residents with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact Simsbury police at 860-658-3100.
