SIMSBURY, CT — Last weekend, Simsbury voters approved all four town and school budget questions during the town’s annual budget referendum, authorizing the fiscal year 2026-27 spending plan and a projected property tax increase.

A few days later, taxpayers received some good news.

The tax hike isn't going to be as high as originally thought, town officials announced Friday.

Town officials initially projected the approved budget package would increase the mill rate from 33.02 to 33.78, resulting in an estimated annual tax increase of about $239 on a median-valued $450,000 home.

However, Simsbury First Selectman Wendy Mackstutis and Simsbury Town Manager Marc Nelson announced Friday that the Simsbury Board of Finance voted May 19 to reduce the final fiscal year 2027 mill rate to 33.67 after the state approved additional education and taxpayer relief funding.

Officials said the revised mill rate lowers the projected annual tax increase on a median-valued home from $239 to approximately $205.

In a joint statement, Mackstutis and Capriola thanked state Rep. Melissa Osborne, D-Simsbury, and state Sen. Paul Honig, D-Harwinton, for advocating for the additional funding at the state Capitol.

The approved overall budget represents an increase of about 2.13% over the current fiscal year spending plan.

On May 16, Simsbury voters approved:

• A $91.5 million Board of Education budget.

• A $30.1 million Board of Selectmen operating budget.

• A $9.37 million special revenue budget covering sewer operations, residential property programs and parks and recreation funds.

• An $18 million capital, non-recurring, and debt service budget.
