The last day of the school year locally was Thursday, June 18.

Juneteenth recognizes the official end of slavery in the United States, with the last slaves being freed in Texas on June 19, 1865.

That date has come to be known as "Juneteenth," and it is now a national holiday.

On Saturday, June 20, a massive Juneteenth event will take place in Simsbury under the organization of four area towns.

The Farmington Valley’s largest Juneteenth celebration will return to Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center on Saturday, June 20, bringing together residents from four towns for an evening of live entertainment, food, family activities and fireworks.

The free event, scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., is organized by the Simsbury DEI Council, with entertainment programming produced by June Archer’s Eleven 28 Entertainment.

The celebration is supported by the towns of Avon, Farmington, Granby and Simsbury.
