Simsbury Urges Caution As Heat and Humidity Grip Region

SIMSBURY, CT — Simsbury officials are urging residents to take precautions during a prolonged stretch of dangerous heat expected to continue through Sunday, July 5, with heat index values forecast to reach as high as 110 degrees.

In a public notice issued Tuesday, the town's Department of Community and Social Services said the long-duration heat wave began June 30 and is expected to bring intensely hot and humid conditions through the holiday weekend.

Gov. Ned Lamont has activated Connecticut's Extreme Hot Weather Protocol through 6 p.m. Sunday, July 5. Residents seeking relief from the heat can call 211 or visit 211ct.org to locate the nearest cooling center.

Town officials encouraged residents to remain indoors in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, use fans, keep curtains and blinds closed during the day, stay well hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

Those who must be outdoors are advised to schedule activities during the early morning or evening hours.

The Simsbury Public Library is available as a place to cool off during regular business hours, Monday through Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The library will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

Officials also encouraged residents to take advantage of shaded outdoor locations, including the pavilions at Town Forest, Tariffville Park and Hop Brook Landing, as well as tree-covered trails at Ethel Walker Woods and other state parks. Simsbury Farms Pool and Memorial Pool are also open during the heat wave.

The town is asking residents to check on elderly family members and neighbors and to never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.

Residents with questions or concerns about someone who may be at risk from the heat can contact the Simsbury Community and Social Services Department at (860) 658-3283. Officials noted that the department does not monitor its phone line or voicemail during weekends or holidays. Anyone experiencing a medical emergency should call 911.
