SIMSBURY, CT — Simsbury will hold a brief public remembrance Friday morning to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The gathering will take place at the flagpoles outside Simsbury Town Hall, 933 Hopmeadow St., shortly before 8:46 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, rain or shine. The public is welcome to attend.
The time corresponds with when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.
Simsbury Town Manager Marc Nelson has invited municipal employees and Simsbury Board of Education staff to gather for a moment of silence and remembrance.
Emergency service personnel from throughout Simsbury have also been invited.
No formal remarks are currently planned, according to the town.
Simsbury First Selectman Wendy Mackstutis said the gathering will provide residents with a place to honor those killed in the attacks, including first responders who died while responding.
"On this solemn occasion, we are offering a place for everyone in our community to come together to pay their respects—a place where all are welcome," Mackstutis said.
Town flags will be lowered to half-staff and remain there throughout the day in accordance with presidential and gubernatorial directives.
Mackstutis acknowledged that some residents may choose to commemorate the anniversary privately.
"I know many of us may prefer to remember that day privately, reflecting on where we were and what we experienced," she said. "But in our own way, we will all acknowledge the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, and remember the lives forever changed by that day."
