SIMSBURY, CT — Simsbury's Planning Commission gets an update on the townwide zoning regulation rewrite, the town has expanded a property tax exemption for disabled veterans and their surviving spouses, and a low-cost rabies clinic is coming up Oct. 31.

1. Planning Commission Gets Zoning Rewrite Update
When: Tuesday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m.
Where: Simsbury Town Hall, 933 Hopmeadow St.
What to know: The Planning Commission will get a progress update and presentation on the 2026-27 review and update of the town's zoning regulations, according to the agenda.

2. More Veterans Qualify For Tax Exemption
When: Takes effect with the Oct. 1, 2026, grand list (July 2027 tax bills)
Where: Simsbury Assessor's Office, Town Hall, 933 Hopmeadow St.
What to know: The Board of Selectmen has adopted state local options that expand the property tax exemption for certain disabled veterans, according to the assessor's office. Veterans rated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as unemployable because of a service-connected disability now qualify, along with more surviving spouses, and the exemption can cover up to two acres of land as well as the house. The exemption is capped at the town's median residential assessment, now $261,940. Questions go to the assessor at 860-658-3251.

3. Board Of Selectmen Meets
When: Wednesday, Oct. 14, 5 p.m.
Where: Simsbury Town Hall, 933 Hopmeadow St.
What to know: The Board of Selectmen is scheduled to meet, according to the town calendar. No agenda had been posted as of Thursday, Oct. 8.

4. Temporary Speed Humps Near 2 Schools
When: Through about late October
Where: Tariffville Elementary School area, Tariffville
What to know: Public Works installed temporary speed humps near Henry James Memorial School and Tariffville Elementary School in late September for about four weeks, according to the town manager's report. The town is measuring speeds before, during, and after, and the humps will go in at a different school next spring.

5. $20 Rabies Clinic Coming Oct. 31
When: Saturday, Oct. 31, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Weatogue Fire Station, 251 Hopmeadow St.
What to know: The Simsbury Police Department and Double A Veterinary Hospital hold a rabies vaccine clinic for dogs on leashes and cats in carriers, according to the town. The cost is $20, cash only. Bring the most recent rabies certificate to get a three-year vaccine (a one-year vaccine is given without it) and proof of spay or neuter. Residents of any town are welcome. Questions go to Animal Control at 860-658-3110.
