SIMSBURY – Continuing with a yearlong series of events marking 50 years since its establishment in 1961, Hop Meadow Country Club June 15 celebrated the 50th anniversary of the day the club’s 18-hole course officially opened.
Club members and staffers gathered for a happy hour celebration on the driving range, followed by a champagne toast led by Hop Meadow Board President Peter Zummo of Simsbury, a 21-year club member.
“Here’s to another 50 years,” he said, raising his glass.

Zummo then handed a golf club with historic significance to Richard Forde of Simsbury, chairman of the board’s greens committee and a 28-year club member, for a celebratory drive from the golf range. The golf club once belonged to the late Jonathan Eno, who lived across from the golf course’s first tee and was one of the club’s founding members.
Last July, Hop Meadow celebrated the 50th anniversary of the day the first match was played at Hop Meadow’s Geoffrey Cornish-designed golf course. Because only the front nine holes were open at the time, golfers played them twice. Mr. Eno’s clubs, lent to Hop Meadow by his grandson, were used then as well.

Other anniversary events Hop Meadow held last year included a jubilee dinner and a founders’ dinner.
Hop Meadow is a full-service private club featuring a championship 18-hole golf course (Par 72-6,915 yards) that has four sets of tees to challenge all levels. The facility includes a driving range, chipping/bunker practice area, putting green and pro shop. Jason Waters is head golf professional.
