Area Athletes Shine at State Open Indoor Track Championships

Two individuals and a relay team from northern Connecticut took first place honors at the indoor track and field championships in New Haven.

A number of athletes from north-central Connecticut turned in impressive performances in the State Open indoor track and field championships this past weekend at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Tolland led the way with a pair of first-place finishes. AmyErin Zadroga won the pole vault by clearing 11 feet, while the 1,600 sprint medley team of Marissa Airoldi, Jessica Barry, Maddie Clark and Julia Sprout edged runnerup Danbury by .01 of a second.

Vickie Milledge of Simsbury won the 55 meter hurdles, upsetting top-seeded Jada Harris of St. Joseph with a blistering time of 8.30 seconds.

Sprout took second in the 600 meter run, and Katherine Deloreto duplicated that feat in the 1,000 meters for Tolland. Elizabeth Lodge of Manchester was second in the high jump.

3rd: Hayley Collins, Tolland - 3,200 meters
4th: Katherine Deloreto, Tolland - 3,200 meters; Abby Gothers, East Catholic - high jump
6th: Dymonic Tann, Manchester - 55 meters; Simsbury 4x200 relay team; Tolland 4x400 relay team

Tolland’s girls, the defending State Open champions, finished third to become the only team from the north-central region to crack the top 10.

On the boys’ side, Philip Quaye of Manchester had the top individual performance among the locals, tying for third in the high jump.

Joshua Prell of Simsbury was fourth in the 300 meters, Israel Adesina of Manchester took fifth in the 55 meter hurdles and the Ellington 4x200 relay team finished fifth.
