Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

• Eastern Connecticut State University's Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education held its annual year-end award ceremony and Alpha Upsilon Chi honor society induction ceremony on May 2. Among the honored was Daniel Straughn of Simsbury, who majors in Physical Education. Straughn was presented with the Outstanding Student Teacher Award.

Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock PA

• Alexa Guglielmino and Daniel Shaffer, both of Simsbury, have been named to the SRU dean's list for the spring 2019 semester. The dean's list consists of undergraduate students who earned an adjusted semester grade-point average of 3.5 or higher, based on a schedule of at least 12 newly attempted and earned credits.

Tufts University, Medford MA

• Nearly 1,500 undergraduate students were awarded degrees in disciplines ranging from the sciences and engineering to the humanities and fine arts during Tufts University's annual commencement, which featured an address by award-winning actress and activist Alfre Woodard. The graduates from the School of Arts and Sciences and School of Engineering included Kathleen Martensen of West Simsbury, with a degree in English (BA), Magna Cum Laude, and Christiana Hug of Weatogue, with a degree in Biology (BS).

University of Vermont, Burlington VT

• Some 3,275 students, including three from Simsbury, were awarded degrees during the University of Vermont's 218th commencement ceremonies. Annabelle Iler graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Professional Nursing. Andrew Simeon graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Entrepreneurship. Lydia Swain graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Communication.

Wesleyan University, Middletown CT

• On May 26, two students from Simsbury were awarded degrees at Wesleyan University. Austin Pope earned a BA degree in College of East Asian Studies and Government; he previously attended Westminster School. Caitlin Wood earned a BA degree in American Studies; she previously attended Pomfret School.
