"The art of basketry first stole my heart in the summer of 2001. At the time it was a new art form for me to explore, one that I quickly came to learn was hard to find. I love the connection it provides us to the past and how useful, functional and beautiful they are. A well-cared for basket will last for generations.
Each piece I weave is woven from scratch. My materials arrive in a minimally processed state; I dye them by hand and weave them into baskets of various shapes and sizes without the use of molds. Although I was taught the very basics long ago, the vast majority of my techniques have been self taught by studying various photographs and baskets in living history museums."

The Archive contains over 1,500 audio recordings made from March 2020 onward, and preserves diverse representations of folklife; ballads, hymns, tales, poems, children’s songs, and interviews among them. The focus of this collection is on the "non-singer": someone with no background in musical performance who can nevertheless relate a song or folkloric memory. In this lecture, Derek will walk you through the process of journeying everywhere from Iceland to Appalachia to record these songs from non-musicians, as well as the organization and development of the Archive as a web-based repository.

Derek Piotr is a folklorist, researcher and performer whose work focuses primarily on the human voice. His work covers practices including fieldwork, vocal performance, preservation and autoethnography; and is primarily concerned with tenderness, fragility, beauty and brutality. He has collaborated with artists including Scott Solter, Nathan Salsburg and Thomas Brinkmann across various disciplines.

This presentation explores the process of posing people for portraits. The discussion focuses on the ”Do’s and Don'ts” of working with people for portrait photograph along with posing tips.
Topics will include items intended to prepare the photographer prior to and during the session along with providing some posing tips and guidelines for posing. The session will include how to interact with your subject(s) along with suggestion for them on how to place their hands, arms and direction of their body. Posing Apps will be discussed.
This presentation will not include a live posing session – that topic may be covered at a later date.

The music department at First Church Simsbury will present, as the final part of this year’s concert series, a special cabaret performance by outstanding jazz, R &amp; B and New Orleans artist Wanda Houston, at 7 PM on Friday, May 8.
Palmer Hall, the church’s great gathering hall, will be decked out with candles and decorations on each table, and there will be light fare and beverages available as you sit with friends and enjoy a mesmerizing mix of jazz and R&amp;B music in a fun, informal atmosphere on a warm spring evening.&nbsp;Houston, a Chicago native who has come to call the Berkshires “home” after touring internationally, is known throughout the region as the “Berkshire Diva”.Her project, known as the “HBH Band”, consists of some exceptional and seasoned area musicians: Berklee grad and area teacher and performer Jay Bradley on drums, and keyboardist Scott Heth, also a long-time Western CT and Berkshire performer, on the grand piano. Added to this mix will be Charlie Tokarz – a celebrated area master of the saxophone, flute and clarinet, also a music teacher.

S.P.A.R.K.&nbsp;stands for&nbsp;Science. Play. Action. Research. Knowledge,&nbsp;and that’s exactly what the morning is all about. Students will dive into interactive labs, ask big questions, and explore how science connects to the world around them.
Throughout the morning, students will rotate through all three engaging sessions:

Students will test everyday foods to uncover the building blocks of life - carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.
