Choral Revue at Simsbury High School to Feature Music Throughout the Decades

Simsbury High School to present family-friendly concert, free of charge and open to the public.

Music from the 60s through today will be featured at the popular Choral Revue in the Simsbury High School auditorium at 7:00 pm on May 25, 2017. The concert is free and open to the public.

“I am so excited about the nostalgic theme, and can't wait to see it and be part of it,” says SHS student, Caoilfhionn Carr, who has been busy rehearsing with the Treble Choir.

The annual Choral Revue has been a tradition at Simsbury High School for over a decade. To put together this upbeat and fun final concert of the year, student choir officers first get together to choose a theme. Repertoire, staging, choreography, and costume decisions are then based on that theme. Students learn difficult music and complicated choreography in a very short time period, working together to create a lively program that appeals to all ages.

This year’s theme is Decades, featuring songs from the 1960s - 2000s. The audience will enjoy music from Elvis to Lady Gaga, with each choral ensemble performing songs from a different decade.

In addition to the choral ensembles, three student-led SHS a cappella groups will entertain. Andiamo will sing Pentatonix’ Evolution of Music, No Fella A Cappella is preparing Royals, by Lorde, and the Unaccompanied Minorswill sing a #ThrowbackThursday number Runaround Sue, from Eddie and the Cruisers.

The Henry James Middle School Select Chorus will also take the stage, singing One Republic’s I Lived. Many of these students will be joining SHS music ensembles in the next two years.

In addition to the choral ensembles, some Senior performing arts students will perform solos, choosing songs to fit the Decades theme.

This concert can be a bittersweet performance, giving the community, parents, faculty and students the opportunity to celebrate the musical accomplishments of graduating seniors and bid farewell in their final high school performance.

“The seniors have a special place in my heart.” says SHS Choral Director, Mrs. Colleen Thompson, who previously was choral director at Henry James Middle School. “This is the class that followed me from HJMS to SHS, so we have worked together for 6 years. It is amazing to see how far they have come and I will miss them dearly.” Many of these seniors have appeared on that stage throughout their middle and high school careers, and plan to give it their all in their final performance.

“I'm super excited to work the lighting for the show, and all the senior songs are going to be amazing,” says sophomore theatre tech student AJ Rose, who has been busy working to help create a spectacular show experience.

The show is fully staged, and will be accompanied on piano by veteran SHS musical director Robert Tomasulo. Making their choral revue debut will be a “house band” featuring Simsbury Public School custodian Jack Gilson on bass, student teacher from the Hartt School James Pecsok on saxophone, and sophomore drummer extraordinaire Avery Gottshall.
