Cobb School Montessori: A Legacy of Educational Excellence

FARMINGTON VALLEY, May 1, 2024 – Cobb School Montessori, nestled in the heart of the Farmington Valley, celebrates a remarkable milestone this year – 50 years of educational excellence. From its humble beginnings in 1974 to its current sprawling campus, Cobb School has remained steadfast in its commitment to providing a nurturing and enriching Montessori environment for children.

The Founder
"In 1974, I envisioned a place where children could learn joyfully and explore their innate curiosity," recalls Mary Lou Cobb, founder of Cobb School Montessori. 50 years ago, a satellite school of the Montessori School of Greater Hartford, with nine students in the basement of Ethel Walker School, became the Montessori Children's House and later Cobb School Montessori. Under the leadership of Mary Lou Cobb, Cobb School blossomed into a beacon of educational excellence. Over the next several decades, the school has grown its campus to over 7 acres of thoughtfully curated learning environments with over 165 children, toddlers through 12 years (6th grade).

Transitions
After 45 years of educating, overseeing expansions, and making Cobb School a name of excellence in the Montessori community, Mary Lou Cobb stepped down. Sue Angelides stepped in as Head of School in 2019, just in time to face the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under her leadership, the school not only weathered the storm but flourished.

"The resilience of our community during those challenging times was truly remarkable," reflects Angelides. Despite the uncertainties, the community rallied together, showcasing resilience and solidarity in the face of adversity.

Environment
"Our beautiful campus is designed to inspire awe and ignite a passion for exploration," says Subha Sankaran, current Cobb Head of School. As you walk into the school, its sunlit hallways, windows, and high ceilings captivate the eye. Each classroom is carefully curated with hands-on, child-sized, and natural materials to attract and inspire the children to work in these orderly, calm spaces. Every classroom boasts access to beautiful gardens that are natural extensions of the classroom. Toddlers and elementary students alike enjoy the expansive playground and fields. The design of the campus ensures a holistic educational experience, seamlessly integrating the indoors and outdoors and promoting a deep connection with nature.

Programmatic Growth
Cobb School was founded on the principles of Montessori education and adheres to the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) standards. "We are grounded in our commitment to Montessori principles," affirms Sankaran. Every classroom has a trained Montessori guide who supports learning that follows a child’s interests, pace, and developmental needs while nurturing initiative, independence, executive functioning, active engagement, and collaboration.

As a culminating experience, the 6th-grade students at Cobb prepare and participate in an international conference with the Montessori Model United Nations. They learn to think critically about current social and environmental issues and work on solutions with fellow delegates.

Enrichment Programs
Cobb School offers a range of enrichment programs. The school boasts an Artists-in-Residence program, Spanish language instruction, and outdoor education. Various music workshops give the children experience and exposure to global music, movement, and performance. A beloved Cobb tradition is an interactive Circus workshop where children work on various unique and challenging skills.

Cobb Community
Central to Cobb School's success has been its unwavering commitment to community engagement.

"Our community is our strength, and we value our partnership with families in the child’s development," emphasizes Sankaran. Cobb School offers opportunities for parents to connect and learn more about the child, the classroom, Montessori pedagogy, and child development and come together as a community. Parents are invited to observe classrooms, volunteer, and participate in community events. From its inception, parents, teachers, and staff have worked hand in hand to build the school and create a nurturing village in which the children thrive. This collaborative spirit has continued, fostering strong ties with alums, past parents, grandparents, and the broader Farmington Valley community.

Celebrating our 50th
In honor of its 50th anniversary, Cobb School Montessori will bring together current and past families, alumni, and staff at Holcomb Farm in West Granby on May 3rd. Additionally, the school’s Board of Trustees will dedicate a time capsule and unveil a special 50th-year tile project by Elementary students on May 24th. These events will serve as homage to our past and inspiration for future generations.
